If you are reading this a year or more before the exam, you are already doing the single most important thing right: starting early. GATE rewards depth over cramming, and the students who clear it comfortably almost always began with a calm, long runway. This guide covers what we reliably know about GATE 2028 CSE and, more importantly, how to start.

Important — what is not yet official

As of now, the GATE 2028 organising institute, notification date and exam date have NOT been announced. The dates below are expected windows based on the fixed annual pattern, not official. Always confirm final dates, eligibility and syllabus on the official GATE brochure when it is released.

Is GATE 2028 realistic for you? (Eligibility)

In recent cycles GATE eligibility has been broad: candidates who have completed, or are in the 3rd year or later of, an eligible undergraduate degree (Engineering/Technology/Science/Arts/Commerce) can appear. There is no age limit and no limit on attempts. This means many students appear in their pre-final or final year.

  • Final-year or pre-final-year B.Tech/B.E. (CSE/IT and allied) students — the most common group.
  • Graduates preparing for M.Tech admission at IITs/IISc/NITs, or for PSU recruitment.
  • BSc/BCA/MCA students — check the latest brochure for your exact degree code.

Because the exact list of eligible qualifications is revised occasionally, treat the above as indicative and verify your degree against the official GATE 2028 brochure before you register.

The syllabus is stable — start on it now

Good news: the GATE CSE syllabus barely changes year to year, so you can begin on the current syllabus today without waiting for GATE 2028 to be announced. The core subjects are:

  • Engineering Mathematics & Discrete Mathematics
  • Programming (C) & Data Structures
  • Algorithms
  • Theory of Computation and Compiler Design
  • Operating Systems
  • Databases (DBMS)
  • Computer Networks
  • Computer Organization & Architecture (COA) and Digital Logic
  • General Aptitude (common to all papers)

For the topic-by-topic breakdown and how much each subject is worth, read our GATE CSE syllabus with subject weightage.

Expected GATE 2028 timeline (tentative)

GATE runs on a very regular annual calendar. Based on that pattern, expect something close to the following for 2028 — again, tentative until officially announced:

StageExpected window
Notification & brochureAround August–September 2027
Online registrationSeptember–October 2027 (late fee into November)
Admit cardJanuary 2028
ExamFirst two weekends of February 2028
ResultMid-March 2028

Your first 90 days

  1. Pick two subjects to begin — one mathematical (Discrete Maths or Algorithms) and one conceptual (Operating Systems or DBMS). Finish their theory properly before adding more.
  2. Learn from one primary source per subject (standard textbook or a trusted lecture series); avoid collecting ten resources you never finish.
  3. After each topic, solve that topic from previous-year papers immediately — this is where real learning happens. Start free on our GATE PYQ with solutions.
  4. Maintain a one-page formula/short-notes sheet per subject from day one. You will revise from this in the final month.
  5. Do not touch mock tests yet. Build the base first; full mocks belong to the last 3–4 months.
