GATE Cutoffs & Scores: What You Need for IITs and PSUs
How GATE marks, score and rank relate, what qualifying cutoffs mean, and a realistic sense of what it takes for IIT M.Tech admission versus PSU recruitment.

GATE throws a lot of numbers at you — marks, score, rank, qualifying cutoff, admission cutoff. They are not the same thing. This guide untangles them and sets realistic expectations. Exact cutoffs change every year and by category, so treat all numbers here as directional, not official.
Marks vs score vs rank
- Marks: your raw performance out of 100.
- GATE score: a normalized figure out of 1000, derived from your marks (and session normalization where applicable).
- Rank (AIR): your position among all candidates in that paper.
Qualifying cutoff vs admission cutoff
The qualifying cutoff is the minimum marks to be declared GATE-qualified — it is relatively low. Clearing it only means you have passed GATE; it does not get you into an IIT. The admission cutoff at a top institute is far higher and is set by competition for limited seats. Do not confuse qualifying with getting admitted.
For IIT / IISc M.Tech admission
Admission to top institutes is rank-driven and competitive. As a rough guide, a strong GATE score and a low All-India Rank (commonly a few hundred or better for the most sought-after CSE programs) is what opens doors at the top IITs/IISc, with cutoffs varying by institute, program and category. Many good opportunities also exist beyond the very top ranks — at other IITs, NITs and reputed institutes through CCMT and institute-level processes.
For PSU recruitment
Many public-sector undertakings recruit through the GATE score. Their cutoffs are typically higher than the GATE qualifying cutoff and change yearly with vacancies and applicant strength. Each PSU releases its own notification, score cutoff and selection process (often GATE score + interview/group discussion). Always follow the specific PSU notification.
What to actually aim for
Rather than chasing a specific number, aim to maximise your marks: finish the syllabus, master PYQs and do serious mock analysis. A high score opens the most options; the exact cutoff you need depends on the year, institute, program and your category.
Where to confirm real cutoffs
For admissions, check each institute and the CCMT portal; for PSUs, check the individual PSU recruitment notifications. These publish the official, category-wise cutoffs for that year.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GATE qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff?+
The qualifying cutoff is the minimum mark to be declared GATE-qualified and is relatively low. The admission cutoff at top institutes is much higher and set by competition for limited seats.
What GATE rank do I need for an IIT M.Tech in CSE?+
It is competitive and varies by institute and category, but a low All-India Rank (often a few hundred or better for the most sought-after CSE programs) is typically needed at the top IITs/IISc. Many options exist beyond the very top ranks too.
What GATE score do PSUs require?+
PSU cutoffs are usually higher than the GATE qualifying cutoff and change each year with vacancies. Each PSU publishes its own score cutoff and selection process in its recruitment notification.
Is clearing the GATE cutoff enough to get into an IIT?+
No. Clearing the qualifying cutoff only means you passed GATE. Admission depends on the much higher institute-specific admission cutoff and your rank.
