How to Use Previous-Year Papers (PYQ) to Crack GATE

Previous-year questions are the highest-yield resource in GATE prep. Here is exactly how to use them — topic-wise first, then full papers — to convert practice into marks.

Ask any GATE topper for one piece of advice and most will say the same thing: do previous-year questions, seriously and repeatedly. PYQs reveal the exact depth, phrasing and traps GATE uses. Here is how to extract the most from them.

Step 1 — Solve topic-wise as you learn (not year-wise, yet)

The moment you finish a topic — say, process scheduling in OS — solve every PYQ on that topic. This connects theory to real questions immediately and exposes gaps while the concept is fresh. Year-wise full papers come later.

Step 2 — Keep an error log

For every question you get wrong, write one line: what concept you missed or what trap you fell for. Review this log weekly. Your error log, not the questions you already solve correctly, is where your next marks are hiding.

Step 3 — Study the solution even when you are right

A good GATE solution often shows a faster method or a cleaner way to reason. Read the worked solution even for correct answers to pick up speed and technique. Our GATE PYQ with solutions give a full step-by-step explanation for every question for exactly this reason.

Step 4 — Then do full papers, timed

In the last 3–4 months, attempt complete papers in one 3-hour sitting under exam conditions. This trains stamina, time management and the skill of choosing which questions to attempt first. Try, for example, GATE CS 2024 Set 1 and GATE CS 2023 as full timed papers.

Step 5 — Revisit, do not just move on

Re-solve the questions you got wrong after a few weeks. A question you missed once and never revisited is a mark you will likely lose again in the exam.

A simple PYQ loop

Learn a topic → solve its PYQs → log errors → revise the log weekly → re-solve wrong ones → full timed papers in the final months. Repeat per subject.

How many years of PYQs should you do?

Aim for the last 8–10 years. Older papers are still useful for concept coverage, though the pattern (MSQ, NAT) is best reflected in recent years. Quality of analysis matters more than racing through every paper once.

Frequently asked questions

How many years of GATE PYQs should I solve?+

Aim for the last 8–10 years. Recent papers best reflect the current pattern (MSQ/NAT), while older ones add concept variety.

Should I solve GATE PYQs topic-wise or year-wise?+

Both, in order: topic-wise while you are learning each subject, then full year-wise timed papers in the last 3–4 months for exam practice.

Are GATE previous-year questions repeated?+

Exact questions are rarely repeated, but concepts and question patterns recur constantly. Mastering PYQ concepts prepares you for the new variations GATE asks.
