CBSE Class 12 Boards: Subject Strategy & Timetable
How to balance board preparation with competitive-exam goals in Class 12 โ subject strategy, a workable timetable, and avoiding the common burnout traps.

Class 12 carries more pressure than Class 10 because boards often overlap with competitive-exam preparation. The way through is a clear strategy and a timetable you can actually keep.
Know your weightage and blueprint
Each subject has a marking blueprint โ which chapters and question types carry the most marks. Study the blueprint early so your effort tracks the marks, and so you never over-invest in a low-weight chapter while neglecting a heavy one.
Subject strategy
- Maths / Physics: concept + heavy problem practice; maintain a formula and mistake log.
- Chemistry: balance the three parts โ do not let the memory-heavy sections slide to the last week.
- Biology: NCERT is king; diagrams, terms and precise definitions win marks.
- Commerce/Humanities subjects: practise structured, point-wise written answers and case-based questions.
A realistic timetable
- Divide the day into 2โ3 study blocks with real breaks; do not plan 10-hour marathons you cannot sustain.
- Rotate subjects daily so no subject goes untouched for more than two days.
- Fix a daily revision slot for previously covered chapters.
- Reserve weekends for full sample papers and backlog clearance.
Boards and competitive exams together
The overlap is large โ your NCERT and concept work serves both. Keep board-specific answer-writing practice for the final 6โ8 weeks, and let the shared concept preparation do double duty until then.
The final 6โ8 weeks
Shift from learning to writing. Solve the last several years of board papers and the latest sample papers under timed, exam-like conditions. Review the marking scheme to learn how marks are awarded, and revise only from your short notes in the last fortnight.
Protect your health
Sleep, meals and short breaks are not optional. Burnout in January costs more marks than an extra hour of tired study ever earns. Plan rest deliberately.
Frequently asked questions
How do I balance Class 12 boards with competitive exam preparation?+
Lean on the shared concept and NCERT work that serves both, and reserve board-specific answer-writing practice for the final 6โ8 weeks before the exams.
How many hours should a Class 12 student study?+
There is no fixed number. Two to three focused blocks a day with real breaks, kept up consistently, beats occasional long marathons. Prioritise quality and sleep.
When should I start solving sample papers for Class 12?+
Begin timed sample and previous-year papers in the final 6โ8 weeks, after your concepts are reasonably solid, and increase the frequency as the exam nears.
Is NCERT enough for Class 12 boards?+
NCERT is the core and sufficient for a large share of board marks, especially in Biology and Chemistry theory. Supplement with problem practice in Maths and Physics.
