School olympiads reward thinking, not memorising. They test whether you can apply concepts to unfamiliar problems — a skill that also makes you stronger at boards and future competitive exams. Here is how to approach them.

How olympiads differ from board exams

  • Questions are application- and reasoning-heavy, not recall-based.
  • There is usually a logical-reasoning / higher-order-thinking section.
  • Time pressure is real, so speed with accuracy matters.
  • Syllabus is broadly aligned to your class level, but questions go deeper.

Build the foundation first

You cannot solve clever problems on a shaky base. Make sure your current-class concepts are genuinely solid — olympiad problems are usually just familiar concepts combined in unfamiliar ways. Strengthening fundamentals is 70% of the work.

Then train on problems

  1. Solve previous years of the specific olympiad you are targeting — they reveal the style and depth.
  2. Spend time on each problem before checking the solution; the struggle is where the skill forms.
  3. When stuck, study the solution, then re-solve it yourself from scratch a day later.
  4. Keep a log of problem "ideas" or tricks you learn, grouped by topic.

Reasoning and mental math

Most olympiads include a logical-reasoning section and reward quick, accurate mental calculation. A few minutes of reasoning puzzles and mental-math practice daily pays off directly.

A light weekly plan

Alongside regular school study, add two or three olympiad-focused sessions a week: one for concept depth, one or two for problem-solving from past papers. You do not need a separate heavy schedule — steady, thoughtful practice over months is what builds olympiad ability.

The real payoff

Even if you do not top the olympiad, the problem-solving habit transfers directly to board exams and later to JEE/NEET-style thinking. The effort is never wasted.

Frequently asked questions

How are olympiads different from school board exams?+

Olympiads are application- and reasoning-heavy rather than recall-based, usually include a logical-reasoning section, and ask deeper questions under time pressure, even though the topics align with your class level.

How should I start preparing for a Maths or Science olympiad?+

First make your current-class concepts genuinely solid, then train on previous years of the specific olympiad, spending real time on each problem before checking the solution.

Do I need a separate heavy timetable for olympiad preparation?+

No. Two or three focused sessions a week alongside regular school study, kept up over months, is enough to build strong olympiad problem-solving ability.

Is olympiad preparation useful even if I do not win?+

Yes. The problem-solving and reasoning skills transfer directly to board exams and later competitive exams like JEE and NEET, so the effort always helps.
